An HPSG Account of Danish Determiners

چکیده

A desirable property of a noun phrase analysis is a level of detail which makes it possible to account for the distribution of elements inside the phrase. In this respect Danish noun phrase structure poses a special problem because of its subtle combinations of deenite prenominal expressions. Examples of Danish nominals containing such expressions are given in (1) 1. (1) a. denne min nyvundne verden this my newly won world b. denne min begejstring this my enthusiasm c. dette det mest kritiske tidspunkt this the most critical time d. denne den sidste Rabbit-bog this the last Rabbit book e. jeres den gamle grammofon your the old record player f. deres den nnrmeste nabo their the nearest neighbour g. hende den engelske Lolitta med kkmpebrysterne her the English Lolitta with the giant breasts h. ham den forsvundne dreng him the missing boy In (1a) and (1b) the demonstrative determiner denne precedes a possessive determiner. In (1c) and (1d) the demonstrative determiners dette and denne precede the deenite article. In (1e) and (1f) the possessive determiners jeres and deres likewise precede the deenite article. Finally, in (1g) and (1h) the personal pronouns hende and ham precede the deenite article. Hansen 94] provides a description of the semantics of these constructions. In this paper a syntactic account of these expressions within the framework of HPSG is proposed. The HPSG94 noun phrase analysis Pollard & Sag 94] does not provide an account of the expressions in (1). Various alternative HPSG accounts have been put forward which 1 The examples are all corpus examples.

Determiners as Functors: Np Structure in Italian

This article ooers a comprehensive HPSG treatment of determiners within the Noun Phrase, accounting for their rich variety as regards distributional behaviour, category features, dependency relations and semantic contribution. To introduce the reader to the empirical problems at issue, a contrastive examination of English vs. Italian data is carried out at various points in the work, but the Ro...

On the notion ` Minor Category

This paper presents an HPSG based treatment of minor signs, i.e. words which cannot head a phrasal projection. In contrast to what is commonly assumed in PSG, I will argue that the minor signs do not belong to separate speech parts, but that all speech parts have both major and minor members. This claim is substantiated with evidence from the Dutch personal pronouns and the English determiners....

An HPSG Account of Danish Pre-nominals

This article addresses the issue of selection restrictions for noun phrase specifiers. Danish data is presented which shows that definiteness plays an important role in this respect. It is pointed out that an analysis is required in which the specifier, when present, leaves a mark on the projected phrase. This is achieved by assuming that specifiers are syntactic heads of noun phrase constructi...

Incorporation in Danish: Implications for interfaces

Syntactic noun incorporation (SNI) in Danish is a phenomenon that has reflexes in phonology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. In contrast with morphological noun incorporation, which involves compounding of an N stem and a V stem to yield a larger, derived V stem (Mithun, 1984, 847), SNI does not involve any overt word order perturbation or overt morphology, but is rather expressed prosodicall...

An Hpsg Approach to Deenite Concord and Elliptical Nominals

abstract. Nominal categories in Modern Greek are partly uni-ed rather than entirely disjoint, as is traditionally hypothesized, and their commonalities and partial overlap in distribution can be economically captured in terms of inheritance. Deenite concord indicates that the deenite article does not aaect the syntactic category of its mother phrase, rather its contribution is semantic: I propo...
